LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

THU, DEC 12

Vasa Trail: No new snow since yesterday on my late afternoon ski of the 10K loop, but a lot more fresh leaves. Otherwise same conditions as in yesterday's report with just a few thin spots. A fun skate today with Poleless Glen the lead groomer who like all of us has "had it" with the oak leaves, so he designed and will be welding together a tow-able 8' leaf rake. Snow was coming down in chunks on my evening drive home so maybe it will bury those darn leaves before the rain arrives tomorrow.

Lakes of the North: Superb skate conditions exist today. Zero bare spots. Shaping up to be a great race weekend. The Winterstart race starts at 11am on Sat from the Settings Restaurant at LofNorth. Free for all juniors. $15 adults with free luncheon following the race. 7.5km course.

Forbush Corner: Classic skied at Forbush for about 2.5 hours today. Deep classic tracks throughout the East system trails with only a few spots that still have debris in them, easily avoided. Since the forest is mostly white pine, there is no oak leaf problem.

Dunes Golf Club: Fabulous crust base with 3" new on top. Great classic and hardy skaters.
Skate track 3 fairways from the east. Park by shops.
4 mi east of empire on m 72.

Just good stuff.
Kevinski slowski

Forbush Corner: Skated skied all of the east side trails. Very nice conditions. Tracks also looked deep with only a few thin spots.

Forbush Corner: Good news at Forbush. Larry was able to set classic tracks on all the East Side Trails. A few thin spots but it is currently snowing so should fill in nicely. Skate lanes will be a little soft today but good coverage.

Hickory Hills: John K. groomed the Hickory Hills and Meadows trails with the Ginzu late afternoon yesterday. Big cheers to City mechanics for some important and timely repairs to the Ginzu groomer yesterday afternoon.

Meadows: The Ginzu pulled up some grass and dirt on uneven parts of the trail, mainly along the perimeter and drainage crossings. Good conditions were found on the interior of the upper (western, closest to parking meadows). Conditions should remain good today, especially on the interior of meadows, at least until temperatures rise.

Hickory Hills: Thin spots were reported, especially on uneven portions of trail. Use caution on descents as occasional dirt and leaves may have been turned up.

The Vasa Ski Club will host an Open House and Potluck at Hickory Hills Sunday, Dec. 15. 2-5 PM. Check out trails on the Hills and Meadows as well as the gorgeous new lodge.

Forbush Corner: Larry is headed out with the Pisten Bully this morning to groom all the East Side Trails. We will report back later on the condition of the skate lane and classic tracks but early indication is that is should turn out very nice.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: While temps have cooled dramatically, and we have received some additional snow since the wet weather early this week, the trails are not suitable for skiing just yet. We need more snow! We have been making snow the last two nights, and we will commence on creating a man-made loop once we see what the next snow system brings us. For the weekend, plan on a minimum of the practice area with full coverage for demos, the Saturday Free Ski Lesson at 10:30am, and the Jordyn Ross Clinics beginning at 2:00pm. There may be some decent skiing across the street, too, depending on the snowfall before then. Stay tuned!

THE JORDYN ROSS CLINICS THIS WEEKEND ARE FILLING UP FAST! There is still space for Proficient Beginner Classic and Skating Clinics on Saturday, and Advanced Classic on Sunday. Visit our website to register, or call 800-832-2663.

WED, DEC 11

Hickory Hills: Hickory Meadows was cold but nice to ski. Over an inch of new snow on top of yesterdays made for very good conditions. As I was leaving in the afternoon coach K was grooming with the ginzu, probably to make things good for the HS team that was showing up. Didn't ski the hills but I understand it is groomed or at least rolled. Waiting for a little more snow before attacking some of those hills.

Vasa Trail: Averaging about an inch of fresh snow around the 10K course since yesterday, skiing continues to improve. Start Green skate wax worked well with 11F temp at the 4K trail-split during my sunset cruise. Otherwise conditions about the same as yesterday's report with 3K, 5K, 10K and 25K loops including Special K rolled then.

Sleeping Bear Dunes: I know you are looking out your window and seeing fresh snow, BUT we didn't get much at Sleeping Bear Dunes!

We have only about 1" of fresh snow over an icy base on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. Too little for grooming. Temperatures are supposed to warm up and possibly more snow in the coming days. We will keep you posted.

Palmer Woods is higher elevation and has 2" of fresh snow over an icy base. It has not been groomed.

Hanson Hills: We received another 1/2 inch of snow overnight, Groomer Tommy G. has been out this morning combing skate lanes and resetting tracks.
