Going into this 50K Freestyle at the Noquemanon, I had one main thread in mind: Prepare to reserve energy. The strategy I used in those days carried me well this weekend.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SAT, JAN 19

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: After some fresh snow in the past couple days, plus tremendous snow spreading and doctoring efforts by Mike and Tony, conditions range from good to excellent on all trails except Tall Pines. Groomer Mike will snow comb the skating lanes this morning, and fresh tracks were set on the Trappers Cabin trail yesterday. The best conditions are on the Rolling Hills, Trappers Cabin, Wild Turkey and Manitou trails. The worst of the hard-packed spots have been patched up, so aside from bits of oak leaves, conditions are overall very good for skating and good for classic!

Today's Stone Turtle Cafe Lunch Special is the Gourmet Mac 'n Cheese bar!! Choose from a variety of toppings to create your own mac-sterpiece. Plus, stop by and demo the brand new 2020 Fischer 3D Speedmax Skate skis, with gliding sidewalls! Good luck to all Cote Dame racers today!

FRI, JAN 18

Valley Spur: Excellent conditions both skate and classic . Another 3-4" of fresh snow Friday. Dan and Dave worked that snow in and are back out this Sat. a.m. Classic is as good as it gets with the deep track setter and fresh snow.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Good conditions for both skate and classic today.
Just avoid the added back loop. Dirt in tracks and skate lane.

Vasa Trail: To answer Phil's question about the 10K loop, I skated it this afternoon and continue to be amazed at how well it is holding up with faster than average skate speeds and plenty of control thanks to the groomers breaking up and freshening the top layer whenever it starts to become a little too hard-packed. Just a couple of thins spots easily avoided. The worst of it is the first 1/2 K from the trailhead and improves after that. The leaves have been mulched up enough from grooming, or covered under the latest inch of snow so they aren't the face-plant problem they once were. A couple of the groomers will be at ABR Groomers College next week, so they will continue to provide state-of-the-art world class grooming

Shanty Creek - Schuss Mtn: Brad the Groomer spiffed up the skate-skiing on Pine Cone and Winter Brook. Both trails are in good condition for skaters and classic skiers. Snow is thin on Poet’s Loop, Moonlite Run and Meadow Run, while Mountain Creek is track-set, and “real fast, real good” with thin spots in the woods (skier Jamison). 6-8” snow, come enjoy the Up North winter.

Vasa Trail: I wanted to ski a LSD (Long, Slow Distance) today since mild temps & TCAPS had a 1/2 day, so no Nordic Rocks PE classes this afternoon at Blair. I invited several girlfriends, but only Kathy Cook-Dowd answered the call to join me. We started at Timber Ridge, skiing the entire 27km loop counterclockwise, including, of course, Jack Pine,The Nipple & Headwaters, since we both love downhills, yee-haw!!! Although Kathy is faster than me, we completed it in 3:15 hrs, so not so slow. We enjoyed the classic tracks, esp on the 25k loop, and the trail, which was in good condition, except for the oak leaves & tree debris, since didn't get turned under completely during this morning's groom of only 1-2" dusting of overnight snow. We used our skin skis since the tracks were a little crusty & too many leaves for kick wax. In addition, we enjoyed the sun peeking through the clouds, which feels warm when you stop to soak up a few rays! LET IT SNOW!!!

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Classic skied from the Forestville trailhead down to the Noque finish at the log yard this morning. A whole mix of conditions, but mostly poor overall. Tracks were soft and skate lane had a large rut in the middle from fatbikers. Downhills into the ponds were not an issue, no jagged ice. Conditions past the railroad tracks were the most problematic. This section of trail sees a lot of walkers and dogs. The snow depth is also a lot less, so the trail was very hardpacked and dirty with leaves and pine needles.

Vasa Trail: The Vasa continues to hold up well after an inch or two of new snow and a fresh groom earlier today.

I skated the back side (TR to the Rock) and, aside from the leaves, thought the trail was fine. Classic tracks are washed out in a few places but otherwise holding up.

Has anyone skied headwaters/5k/10k?

Hanson Hills: Dick Fultz, Steve Westphal, Jorden Wakeley and I all skied Hanson Hills today. Nothing but excellent conditions. Wide, flat, corduroy, and FAST! Steve and Dick say its some of the nicest skiing they have had all year. Great job to the groomers for keeping it up.

Cote Dame Marie Race tomorrow morning at 10am!

Cote Dame Kids ski festival 1-4pm at NB

Stop by Northbound for BIG SALES this weekend! and to see me, Biker Bob

Crystal Mountain: We did not groom yesterday and today so I went out and skied so I could give you a first hand report. Yesterday I parked by the art park and skied upper stag, does, squirrel, went down aspen climb and came back on loons. The hills were fast but manageable (read-I didn't fall). This morning I skied Jacks and Hawks along with everything I skied yesterday. We got a little dusting which made the hills more friendly. The tracks are better than I thought they would be (I'm a strider) on Loons and upper Stag. It was beautiful out there. Come on over and enjoy the sunshine before it gets cold.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Started my ski just before daylight and grooming began. Conditions were very good. With the warm temp the trail stayed soft enough for great control. Classic tracks were in good shape as well.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Bucks Run will be groomed this morning, and should be ready for use by 9:00. We will be hauling some snow to the connector trail from the woods to the ski center. Please use caution if maintenance is present on this section of the trail. Otherwise enjoy!

Dunes Golf Club: Great fields of white! 4" + with 1" new powder. Classic tracks filled in but skiable and my skate track ( 3rd fairway east by the portapotty) has a firm and fast deck. Overall for natural backcountry cross-country skiing us can't beat it... Make your own fun!!!
Serving th empire, Glen arbor , maple city and northern benzie county areas.
Limited plowed parking
4 mi. East of empire on m-72. please avoid the greens
kevinski slowski

Forbush Corner: After yesterday’s fresh groom on the east side and good results for both the skate lane and classic tracks, Larry is headed out to groom the west side. About one inch of fresh snow that squeezed itself out of the clouds last night will also enhance the trail system. 15% off on hard and soft goods continues in the shop.

Stokely Creek: Over 4 inches of fresh snow in the last couple days. Guests are saying, "skiing on Stokely trails gets better every year!" Groomers going out again today. Beautiful morning with all the trees covered with snow. As I mentioned on Face Book today, our rooms for the month of February are almost totally booked. The next couple weeks have availability.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: We received about a half inch of snow last night, and the Headquarters trails are in really good shape! Trail doctors Mike and Tony did a lot of snow spreading and some targeted trail doctoring this past week, which yielded fantastic results. Groomer Mike will snow comb the skating lanes this morning, and set fresh tracks on the Trappers Cabin trail. The best conditions are on the Rolling Hills, Trappers Cabin, Wild Turkey and Manitou trails. Many of the hard-packed spots were re-covered by snow doctoring efforts yesterday, so aside from bits of oak leaves and a couple remaining hard-packed spots under the big trees, it's overall great skiing and should be enjoyed by many!

Today's Stone Turtle Day Lodge Lunch Special is a bowl of chili and a Bosco stick for $5! Join us this weekend for lots of great events, including Full Moon Night Skiing tonight from 6PM-8PM, a free ski lesson Saturday at 10:30, and a Gourmet Mac 'n Cheese Bar all weekend!
