Well, that was one epic race for the books. Hardest conditions I've had in years, soft snow, falling snow then ice pellets then fog so thick I could see nothing...

It was wet, it was wild, and it was just an event. It was epic. It was a little slow out there. There was three inches of standing water in a lot of places. It kind of slowed down the race but we finished. It was good. It was amazing we held it.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

TUE, JAN 21

Maybury State Park: Tracks were a bit icy and uneven and snow was crusty. Poling was difficult. I used good twin skis and had decent grip and glide. Good opportunity to work on double poling technique.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Skied classic trails south of Hammel Road.
Hard packed and some ice in area with sun out.
Also some dirt and roots starting to come through tracks due to sun.
But still plenty of good skiing for a few days.
Sure beats going in circles!!!!!!

Huron Meadows Metropark: Skied South woods 3-5pm bit icy in places but overall great! to be skiing.

Vasa Trail: Lots of smiles on the Vasa Trail today. Perfect conditions and thanks to the groomers for getting a really nice level surface. Classic tracks were fast and a good day to skate or classic. Skied this years 50k Vasa course with Glenn and Cliff, can't say I miss Jack Pine doing a 50k race. Conditions were so nice and fast that when we got done I went out and did another 4 k.
Can't wait until tomorrow. I will be grooming both Hickory Meadows and the Hills tomorrow if you decide on another venue. Life is good.

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Forestville: Grooming is being focused on Noquemanon Ski Marathon (NSM) race preparation. This year’s very deep snow pack needs a good deal of grooming to work the snow into a hard pack for the NSM. There are a great many “game time decisions” regarding where and when to groom. Every machine in the fleet was out yesterday. Most grooming is focused upon trails used in next weekend’s events. All Forestville trails from the Tourist Park to Co Rd 510 including the spur to NMU’s campus on Wright Street were in great shape and expect more of the same today. You can also expect to see grooming equipment on trails during the day. Please give them room to pass. I tend to avoid the freshly groomed trails in order to let them set up and skiing the soft freshly groomed trails is far less fun than the harder set up trails. I suggest Bagwagi, Chiwagi, Gookookoo, Migize, Mukwa and the section between the Tourist Park and Forestville but all trails are open and have been groomed in the last 24 hours. Watch out for icy sections on the two ponds 1k east of Forestville. Last weekend’s snow had weighted down the ice causing water to spill over the ice. The ponds are well frozen and the ice is quite thick so no need to worry. Enjoy another great day of skiing.

Saux Head: All trails groomed and track set Monday the 20th. Skiing should be fabulous today.

Big Bay Pathway: The big bay pathway, was yesterday (1/20). The groomers didn’t provide any detailed information. Sooo, Hidden Gin Loop is indeed still hidden, but in stellar condition...cheers- sven

Fit Strip: Fit Strip is groomed weekly or as conditions warrant. Yesterday Patricia emailed: I was lucky to follow the groomer from TP TH to the 7K marker on Friday, and luckier still to be on the Fit Strip on Saturday and Sunday, both times while the groomer was out. … Every single trail on the Fit Strip was groomed beautifully on Saturday and groomed again and tracked on Sunday.

Hanson Hills: Great skiing to be had today! Tommy G. is out combing skate lanes this morning.
Lodge at Trails open at 9am.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It's another great day on the ski trails at XC Ski HQ! Groomer Mike will be out early rolling, snow combing the skate lanes, and re-setting tracks where needed. All trails across the street have classic tracks and snowcombed skate lanes. There is 5 to 8 inches of snow packed on the trails, and 8 to 12 inches in the woods. Conditions are excellent, come out and enjoy a fabulous day of skiing or snowshoeing!

MON, JAN 20

Vasa Trail: Really nice conditions whether you're skating or kicking on today's freshly groomed trail. The big weekend snowfall has now been compacted enough to provide excellent glide, LF-6 was working well.
If you're not real familiar with the trail system but wanting to expand a little beyond the regular 10K loop, here's a favorite extension: Begin on the 10K loop, at the 6.2K signpost make a left turn on Special K and follow Special K to to its end to turn right at T intersection at the 18.3K post on the 25K loop to finish up on the 25K loop for grand total of 14K.

Huron Meadows Metropark: South side (south side of road in the woods) tracks were awesome. Skied-in well and hardened. Some nice classic skiing there. Enjoy!

Corsair Ski Trails: Perfect deep tracks ,classic only. Grip wax anything blue.
Beautiful 10 inches of new snow A skis

Pigeon Creek: Pigeon Creek groomers freshened up the trails overnight, and they showed improvement. Skate lanes were good, with the occasional oak leaf debris; single track was noticeably better given what they have to work with. A little more snow and the conditions could be excellent. All in all, a good workout. South parking lot was only about a third full, much different than yesterday’s full North and South lots.

Muncie Lakes Pathway: It's been a LONG wait this season to ski Muncie Lakes SF Pathway groomed, but well worth it after Mike Schaeffer's (many thanks) 2-lap roll & track-setting yesterday! And, thanks to John Gerty for offsetting the track so that skiers and hikers/snowshoers have space alongside each other on the groomed trail. We enjoyed 2 firsts this morning, skiing Muncie, and a group ski together with Sarah, Mary, Kathy Cook-Dowd, Lise and Paula H Dreeszen. The snow was silky, and only a dusting of new snow in the tracks to the Boardman River (outer loop) from posts #8-11, which had not been skied yet. There were several cars in the parking lot before we left at 10AM, and after we returned at noon, so glad others were enjoying the trail, too. If so, there are donation envelopes to support the grooming by 4 Grand Traverse Hiking Club volunteers, which covers snowmobile & chain saw maintenance & gas. For those who make a donation, you receive updates by email on grooming, so know when to head to the trail to ski in virgin tracks. 2 favorite backcountry trails down & 4 to go before the next possible warm-up this weekend! I'm in my happy place again!

Huron Meadows Metropark: Buck's Run, of course, was in very good shape and the widest it's been all year. Coyote Run (north golf course was in good shape - I had a good skate on the groomed-yesterday bit covered in two inches of lake effect today trail. Good skis can be used ( there's a little grass peaking through on Coyote but you can get around it.

The south golf course had quite a bit of grass and scrub - especially on the big downhills on the far right side - I'd recommend avoiding those hills until we get more snow. The rest of the trail was pretty good. I'd use B skis or rock skis on this part of the system.

I did not ski near Maltby Lake so can't provide advice. Ricardo said the classic trails south of Hammel Road were fantastic!

Sleeping Bear Dunes: Saturday's groom along the Heritage Trail was buried by Sunday's 8" or so of light snow. A few intrepid skiers laid down a DIY classic track north from the Empire end of the trail that was still serviceable this morning. Today, arriving back at the parking lot midday after a slow run out and back, turned around to find the groomers coming down the trail. So as of this afternoon, the groomed trail is back.

Milham Park Golf Course: Redid what was groomed yesterday. Added the one to two inches of new fluffy snow to the base improving conditions somewhat. Not great but not bad either. Still to thin and icy under the new snow to set a classic track. Despite this I saw eight or so people striding and enjoying themselves this morning. Its been a long time coming, enjoy the local snow while you can.

Sleeping Bear Dunes: Lots of fresh snow at Sleeping Bear Dunes and Palmer Woods. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail was groomed from Empire to Glen Arbor and from Glen Arbor to Port Oneida Road (north).

Empire to Dune Climb - Groomed Saturday with 2 sets of classic tracks. Conditions are Excellent!

Dune Climb Glen Arbor - Groomed Sunday with 2 sets of classic tracks. Conditions are excellent!

Glen Arbor to Port Oneida Road - Groomed Sunday with corduroy and classic tracks. Conditions are Excellent!

Palmer Woods
Groomed Sunday with classic tracks and corduroy. Conditions are Excellent.

All Sleeping Bear Dunes rustic ski trails have 6-8" of fresh powder. Great backcountry skiing.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Only Buck's run was groomed today, but all trails have good coverage. Staff will work at a full grooming on the north side tomorrow

Hanson Hills: Trails are looking good after this weekends snowfall. Tommy G. is out combing skate lanes on all trails this morning and is planning on Rolling and packing M-93 hills and Wilderness Trails.

Lodge and Trails Open at 9am.

Vasa Trail: Report: #15
Date: 01/20/20
Time: 6:47 am

Good Morning Ski Badgers,

James renovated the skate lane late last night. He reported that the classic tracks set yesterday were is good shape and that " skiing is going to be amazing today ". A little lake effect snow fell on areas of the Vasa this morning so you may find a layer of fluff over a nice firm base.

Good ski conditions are in the immediate future until the late week warm up. So get out to the Vasa and enjoy the fleeting winter scenery.

Peace

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: What a glorious day of skiing it was yesterday! Groomer Mike will be out early rolling, snow combing the skate lanes, and setting tracks on all the trails. All trails across the street will be snowcombed and have tracks set as of this morning. There is 5 to 8 inches of snow packed on the trails, and 8 to 12 inches in the woods. Conditions are excellent for classic, skating, and snowshoeing! Join us for great trails, excellent service, awesome lunch and more.

Forbush Corner: Awesome day yesterday. Some of the best classic tracks ever and The Pines Loop did not disappoint.

We are getting a slightly later grooming start this morning to allow the temps to rise a bit, but plan to groom most or all of the trails. Expect a firmer base and new classic tracks.
